Suaad Hagi Mohamud, who has been in Kenya for nearly three months, was accused of being an imposter when Canadian consular officials voided her passport after concluding that her lips did not match those of her four-year-old passort photo and declared her an imposter. She was then turned over to Kenyan authorities for prosecution. A Nairobi judge dropped the charges against her earlier this week. On Monday, her identity had finally been validated after a DNA test (paid for by the Canadian government) confirmed that she was the mother of her 12-year-old son in Toronto.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that Canadian Border Services will be providing a "full accounting" of how the agency handled the case and Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan will review its actions.
Mohamud, who had gone to Kenya to visit her mother, is expected to be on a flight this evening and in Toronto tomorrow afternoon.
