Zamboni Driver And Emergency Goalie David Ayres Made NHL History Last Night

Fittingly, the scene was Hockey Night In Canada with the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Carolina Hurricanes at Scotiabank Arena yesterday. Ayres, a 42-year-old Zamboni driver for the Leafs, former junior hockey goalie and emergency goalie for the Leafs and the Toronto Marlies, got called into action after the second goalie for the Hurricanes was sidelined with an injury during the second period (the other Hurricanes goalie had also been injured). Suiting up for the Hurricanes, he allowed Toronto to score two goals on the first shots he faced, but then went on to block the next eight, leading the away team to  a crazy 6-3 victory over Toronto.

Cheered on by both teams and the fans, Ayres became the oldest goalie in league history to win his regular season debut. After the last buzzer, the Hurricanes were selling his jersey, #90, on Twitter.
