The final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season got underway officially on Monday with two of the country's young players facing off against each other in first round action. Denis Shapovalov, unseeded, went up against #19 Felix Auger-Aliassime, taking his friend from Montreal out in three sets in just a little more than 90 minutes.
But the biggest surprise of the first round so far may be Vasek Pospisil (ranked #216), who, after missing much of the season following back surgery, upset the #9 seed Karen Khachanov yesterday. It took nearly four hours and went to five sets, but Pospisil rallied after losing the first set. He will play American Tennys Sandgren next.
On the women's side, Bianca Andreescu, who has had a meteoric rise this year, got off to a rocky start in her first round match against American qualifier Katie Volynets. But she prevailed in two sets. She'll meet Belgian Kirsten Flipkens on Thursday.
And don't miss the Canadians playing doubles as well! Shapovalov, Andreescu (partnering with Canadian Sharon Fichman), Pospisil, and Gabriela Dabrowski will be hitting the courts,
