Yesterday, Heymans and her partner Jennifer Abel, won bronze in the women's three-metre synchronized springboard event, giving the country its first medal of the 2012 games, and instantly making her a Canadian sports legend. She became the first Canadian to win four straight medals in four consecutive Olympics (and with three different partners). She is also first female diver to accomplish this extraordinary feat.
As a child, Heymans had studied ballet and hoped her first love would bring her to the Olympics. But she switched to diving after coaches told her she didn't have the right body type for gymnastics. She won a silver in Sydney in 2000 with her partner in the 10m synchro platform.
Look for trampolinist Karen Cockburn to possibly meet the same amazing result in her sport later in the games.
