Toronto's 7th Annual Rally And March For Missing And Murdered Indigeneous Women

Today at 12:30 outside police headquarters on College Street, women and men will gather to honour and protest the hundreds of women missing and killed and a seemingly indifferent government, and to demand an UN investigation.

According to the Native Women Association of Canada's Sisters in Spirit project, nearly 600 women have been murdered or gone missing, many just in the last 30 years. Despite these numbers, the federal government decided to stop funding Sisters in Spirit in the fall of 2010. Instead, $10M went to fund an RCMP database for missing persons.

The Committee to End Discrimination Against Women at the United Nations announced their intent to launch an inquiry into Canada's missing and murdered Indigenous women. This inquiry procedure is used to investigate what the Committee believes to be very serious violations of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Canadian government, however, must consent in order for this to move forward.

Rallies and marches will also be held in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Saskatoon, London (ON), and Winnipeg.
