Stephen Harper Is Reelected As Voters Put The Conservative Party In The Majority
The party won 167 seats with almost 40% of the votes. NDP Leader Jack Layton will now become Official Opposition Leader (102 seats), replacing Michael Ignatieff, who was defeated in Toronto. His Liberal Party, often touted as Canada's "natural governing party", placed a distant third behind the NDP. The Conservatives picked up 23 seats (mainly in Ontario) while the Liberals lost 43. The NDP, however, made out very well, nearly tripling its seats with a gain of 67. For those who don't follow Canadian politics, a party needs to capture 155 seats to ensure a majority in the House of Commons.
