The Story Of The Refugee Family Behind Peace By Chocolate Is Now A Movie, Coming To The Tribeca Film Fest In June

Tareq Hadhad and his family left war-ravaged Syria and made their way to Nova Scotia, settling in Antigonish in 2016. Hadhad's father had been a chocolate maker for decades in Damascus so chocolate was almost literally in the family's genes. In Canada the family started the chocolate company Peace By Chocolate and opened their flagship store in Halifax earlier this year.

Pre-production for the movie began in 2017, helmed by Halifax-born filmmaker Jonathan Keijser. The movie stars the late, legendary Syrian actor Hatem Ali as Hadhad's father. Ali passed away suddenly of a heart attack in December. Hadhad said he feels "so blessed and privileged" to have Ali in the film, in his last acting role.

Everyone involved wants to share the story because it is an inspiring and hopeful one, which audiences can certainly do with more of right now.

The festival begins June 9th in New York City.
