Feminists In Calgary Look To Combat The Sexualization Of Halloween

Urban Curvz, a feminist theatre group, have created Take Back Halloween to give lovers of the holiday a space where they can celebrate without the deluge of age-inappropriate costumes for children as well as outfits that degrade women. After seeing a sexy leopard costume aimed at three-year-olds in a shop, organizer Pam Rocker told Calgary Eyeopener that this is something the group wants to "take back by having something like a feminist costume contest where you actually have to be creative and think about things that don't gender stereotype and that maybe actually empower women." For the alternative event, which will be held on Halloween, there will be puppets, songs and "imagining a future of feminist Disney princesses. For adults there will be a patriarchy haunted house. As Rocker puts it, "What's scarier than the gender gap, you know? I'm missing out on 26 cents an hour. The politicians that maybe aren't the biggest fans of equality may jump out at you at any moment."
