A Well Traveled Message

Last week an Irish child, Oisin Millea, 9, found a bottle with a letter inside while on a treasure hunt on the shores of Waterford Ireland. The letter was written eight years ago by two Montreal teenagers. Charlaine Dalpé and Claudia Garneau, who were 12 at the time, had chucked the bottle into the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2004 while on holiday in Gaspe, Quebec.

The note, written in French, read, "Hello, we are two girls who had the idea to launch a bottle into the sea. To finish, if you don't have Internet, go to a friend's or go to an Internet cafe because we are very curious to know if our bottle was found." But the email the girls provided no longer works. The three have since communicated via Skype.

The girls had gotten the idea after watching a television program about kids who had put messages in bottles. The two-liter soda bottle ultimately had a journey of 2500 miles before it was found. The message itself was dry and intact.

Next summer they'll get to meet face to face when the now 20-year-olds come to stay in Waterford with the Millea family.
