According to a study conducted by the Canadian Centre for the Study of Living Standards, the conclusion seems to be that Toronto will make you miserable.
It has the country's largest GDP and population, but comes in last on the happiness meter. The study culled data from the 2007 and 2008 Canadian Community Health Surveys to determine the cheeriest parts of Canada and did/did not cause people to feel the way they do. A major finding of the study was that "the most important reason for geographical variation in happiness in Canada is differences in the sense of belonging to local communities, which is generally higher in small CMAs, rural areas, and Atlantic Canada."
Before you consider packing up and moving to Sherbrooke, QB, the city that came in at number one, know that Toronto scored a 4.15 out of 5 on the scale while the Quebec city weighed in at 4.37 (a difference of 5.5%).
Finally, courtesy of New York Magazine, a joke about Toronto from actor Nathan Filion, who is in fact from Alberta:
"The rest of Canada considers Toronto kind of uppity. A friend who moved there say s it's so hard to make a friend you have to wait for somebody to die to take their place."
