Grisly Greyhound Ride

On Wednesday night, on a bus en route to Winnipeg, a man, now identified as Vince Weiguang Li , stabbed to death a fellow passenger, Tim McLean, before ultimately beheading him. McLean, 22, had been working at a carnival and had texted his father that evening to ask if he could spend the night at home in Winnipeg. He boarded the bus in Edmonton and had taken a seat in the back. Li, 40, had gotten on the bus in Brandon and had been sitting at the front. After a cigarette break, Li moved his belongings and took a rear seat beside the victim.

Another passenger, Garnet Caton, who sitting in front of the two men, said he was just reading his book when he heard a "bloodcurdling scream." Police received a call reporting the unprovoked attack around 8:30 PM when the bus was about 45 minutes from Winnipeg. Caton shouted at the other passengers to get out. They exited the bus and a trucker who had stopped gave wrenches and crowbars to several of them so that they could detain Li on the bus until the police arrived. A standoff followed and Li was taken into custody with the help of negotiators around 1:30 AM, according to RCMP Sgt. Steve Colwell.

Li, likely mentally ill, has been charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court today in Portage la Prairie.
