Get Out Your Protective Gear - The Eclipse Is Coming!

On Friday, August 1, the sun will be partially eclipsed over a small slice of northeastern North America, with Canadians being the luckiest viewers. A total solar eclipse, the first in nearly 2.5 years, will be visible beginning at the Northwest Passage. At sunrise, the total eclipse will commence off Queen Maud Gulf, where the moon's umbra will first touch the Earth. It will be Canada's first time hosting an eclipse since February 26th, 1979. The umbral shadow's northern edge will just clip the northernmost permanently inhabited place on the globe: the country's remote outpost of Alert, which is just 817 km (508 miles) from The North Pole, and home to 5 inhabitants. The lucky quintet will have 43 seconds of prime viewing.

The Maritime Provinces will get to enjoy a partial eclipse at sunrise as well.
